Not bad, hey, for a DIY zine that turns punk into art and art into punk. As a follow-up to 2022’s London issue guest-edited by Gaye Black, with contributions by the Damned, the Raincoats, the Vibrators, Billy Childish and many other London-based punk-artists more, this fifth issue is guest-hosted by New York’s Bob Bert. As a drummer, Bob Bert played with Sonic Youth, Jon Spencer, Lydia Lunch, and with Kid Congo Powers in Wolfmanhattan Project, to name a few. For this issue of PIONEER Bob Bert joined forces with no meaner artists than Reuben Radding, Jasmine Hearst, Mark C., J.G. Thirlwell, Lydia Lunch and his former Sonic Youth bandmates Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo. Resulting in a zine literally bursting with the sweetest, harshest, rawest, best-balanced photographs, collages, drawings, and what visuals have you. In the grainiest black-and-white and the smoothest colors. Replete with all kinds of extra-special extras. New York: from the pages of the zine straight into your face. Truly a thrilling issue of PIONEER.
Later this year we will bring out a second edition of Pioneer #5, the New York issue.
And Pioneer #6 is in the making.
